Ammunition Shipping Restrictions by State
Most U.S. states currently allow legal shipment of ammunition directly to a buyer’s residential address (“front door”) with no special requirements beyond federal age restrictions:
-
18+ for rifle/shotgun ammunition
-
21+ for handgun ammunition
However, some states and jurisdictions restrict or prohibit direct shipment to the customer. Please review the details below before placing a bid.
States & Jurisdictions with Restrictions
State/Jurisdiction | Restriction Details |
---|---|
California | Although the Ninth Circuit ruled on July 24, 2025 in Rhode v. Bonta that California’s ammunition background check law is unconstitutional and affirmed the permanent injunction, the ruling is not yet in effect. Procedural steps—such as issuing a mandate—are still pending. Until those steps are completed, California’s background check requirements remain in effect and must be followed.

Illinois | Must provide a valid FOID card and state-issued ID. |

A federal court has ruled against the state’s background check law (Rhode v. Bonta, July 2025), but the decision is not yet in effect.
